These tips may help fasten your recovery process:

  • Do care and avoid any type of biting or burning inside portion of your cheek, lip or tongue. This may happen during the period when your mouth is numb.
  • Use icing to cool the outside of your mouth, i.e. cheeks. This should be done in first 24 hours.
  • Do not use your mouth too much and give it rest. Take rest and avoid activities.
  • Take soft foods, which are easy to chew and swallow. Soup, fruit sauce, yogurt, cottage cheese, gelatin, pudding or similar food may be chosen.
  • Sucking through straw or too much rinsing of mouth can slacken blood clot and slow down healing process.
  • After 24 hours of surgery, softly rinse mouth with warm salt water few times a day. You may do this after every meal.
  • Avoid smoking for at least 24 hours after surgery. Nicotine may break down the blood clot and cause delay in recovery. This problem is known as Dry Socket.
  • Avoid following sensation or curiosity and touching the surgery area with finger or rubbing with tongue.
  • Keep your mouth clean. You may brush your teeth carefully and tongue too. Keeping mouth clean will accelerate the healing process.
  • While sleeping keep your head elevated. You may place couple of pillows under your head.
  • Keep water, pain killers and antibiotics (as per dentist’s prescription) with you.
