If you’ve just had a new set of dentures fitted by your dentist, you may be feeling a mixture of excitement and apprehension.

Excitement because you can smile confidently once more and apprehension because you’re unsure about the finer details of false teeth, such as how to clean dentures and whether you need to take them out at night.

Don’t worry. We’re here to answer common questions relating to denture care.

How to care for dentures?

Dentures require a lot of TLC to keep them pristine and serving you well.

Like natural teeth, it’s essential to clean your dentures every day. Dentures attract food and plaque in the same way as natural teeth. If you don’t clean your dentures, plaque may build up, causing your breath to smell and putting you at risk of gum disease and impacting your oral health.

All you need to clean dentures is water and a soft-bristle toothbrush. We don’t recommend toothpaste as often this has an abrasive nature designed to keep tooth enamel clean. As a result, it could gradually wear away the softer acrylic.

Be sure to place a soft cloth on your countertop or fill your basin with water so that your dentures aren’t damaged if you accidentally drop them.

Remember to brush and floss any remaining teeth with toothpaste to maintain good oral health. You should also brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth before placing your dentures back in place.

How to care for dentures at night?

guide how to care for dentures bondi beachWe recommend patients remove their dentures at bedtime to give their gums a rest. Also, when your mouth is closed as you sleep, bacteria can build up. For this reason, it’s best to let your dentures soak in a denture cleaner overnight

Brush your dentures to remove any food particles before removing them and placing them in a denture-soaking solution.

In the morning, give the dentures a clean, and they’ll be nice and fresh when you place them back in your mouth.

How to care for dentures if they loosen?

Your dentures will loosen with time as your gums change shape due to bone loss that occurs when teeth are missing. Your dentist may recommend a reline every two years, which means filling up any space that has developed as your gums change shape with a new surface. Now your dentures will fit snugly once more.

Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of how to care for dentures. Don’t forget it’s still important to visit your dentist so they can keep an eye on your oral health

We also recommend you consider a periodic professional denture clean if your dentures are not looking as good as they should. An ultrasonic bath dissolves dental plaque, while ultrasound waves will leave your denture squeaky clean.
